Helter swelter
Editor's note: If you stayed indoors and air-conditioned Wednesday,
you missed out on a sweltering blanket of heat that suffocated weather
records for the day.
In Greenfield, temperatures rose above 97 degrees by some
measurements, breaking the 1995 high for the day of 96, according to
Recorder records.
For those of you who kept your cool Wednesday, here's some of what
you missed...

Roasted and toasted
Even with the temperatures climbing into the high 90s and the heat
index making it feel more like 106, there was a pot of hot coffee
brewing at Pierce Brothers Coffee on Hope Street in Greenfield.
"Some people say it cools down your body," said co-owner Darren
Pierce, shortly before he poured himself a cup.
During the summer, Pierce tries to get roasting done early in the morning
because the heat coming off the beans is about 120 degrees.
"Man, was it unbearable," said Pierce.
But sometimes it's unavoidable to be roasting at midday, as they were on
Wednesday.
In the roasting room, where a gas burner fires out a 600-degree
flame, the air is heavy with heat.
"We have an air conditioner here, they're fighting like cat and
dogs," Pierce said of the roaster and the air conditioner. |
