Sunderland -- A small fire Monday in the Java
Hut in Squire Village Plaza on Route 116 was quickly contained and
extinguished before any severe damage occurred. But the
gourmet coffee and sandwich shop that opened in the plaza 10 years ago
will be closed for a couple of days. Firefighter James
Bernier said the fire began around noon in the stove area of the kitchen
and went up a wall. "We stopped it before it went up into the
rafters," he said. Bernier said the cause of the fire had
not been determined. Firefighters from South Deerfield and
Amherst also responded to the blaze. |
Owner Sean Pierce said
that there was no structural damage and he expects to be open again in a
day or two. "Most of it was contained by a fire extinguisher,"
Pierce said. A customer first noticed the smoke coming out
of the kitchen just before the fire alarms went off, Pierce
said. Shop manager Daniel Braman said he managed to
contain the flames until firefighters arrived. "I had to go in three
times to keep it contained," Braman said. "I've never seen
a volunteer fire department respond as quick as this one," said Braman, who
has worked in other departments as a volunteer. Cris Carl can be reached at ccarl@gazettenet.com.
