Certified organic coffees are grown
using no pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers. Being organically
certified requires a great commitment to sustainability and biodiversity,
rigorous inspections, and meticulous recordkeeping. As of October, 2002,
roasters must also become organic certified in order to offer organic
coffees. Pierce Bros Java Coffee Roasters are proud to be among the first to
become a Certified Organic Roasting facility by the U.S.D.A.!

Fair trade contracts mean survival for many small farmers. In fair trade
contracts, buyers purchase beans at prices that help guarantee the farmers
are paid a fair wage for their hard work. Growers, in return, upgrade
the quality of their coffee by following sustainable farming practices.
