New Cafe comes to Greenfield
BY NANCY WOOD

La Petite Café to be opening in early September.  The small eatery, which is located between the Greenfield Post Office and the public parking area, on Main Street is sprucing up for their opening.  The "Massachusetts Commission for the Blind", own the building, and the equipment.  John DeLaBruere, who has been legally blind since 1970, interviewed with the Commission to lease the eatery.
John said that 37 years ago he lost the sight in one eye, in a car accident.  He holds a Masters in Psychology from Springfield College, and a Masters in Business from Cambridge College.  He has culinary experience from the time he ran the "Hometown Café", a breakfast and lunch spot in Wilbraham (1984-1990).  He was working as a pastor minister in St. Bridgett's Church in Amherst when the couple met.  John and his wife, Debbie, explained that the Commission for the Blind own many vending stands throughout the State, but most are in malls, not a freestanding building such as the one in Greenfield.  The Commission is in the process of replacing some of the equipment.

The establishment has been closed for quite some time, and they are polishing, painting and putting up finishing touches, John states, "Greenfield people deserve quality food, and that is what I'll have at La Petite Café."
The couple is planning a "soft" opening sometime in mid August, with an official opening in early September.  They plan to serve all, and cater to businesses, with quick and good food at a good price.
John is Canadian, his first language being French.  He told of growing up in upper Vermont (Island Pond) where at the end of his
driveway was the Custom's office. Debbie is from the Boston area, and spent her summers, growing up, in Maine.  They share a love of gardening and cooking.
When telling of why they chose Greenfield to make their home, and open a business, John says, "Greenfield is the right size, and the people are friendly.  It has a Vermont flavor".  John's 21-year-old daughter, Shannon, will lend a hand around the store, and/or babysitting the couples three boys (ages 1, 2 and 10).
The menu will include: pouting, which is French Canadian (French fries with melted cheese and brown gravy)  They will have croissant sandwiches and Pierce Brothers gourmet coffee.  They will start the menu with approximately 8-10 sandwich items, and look for suggestion for expansion of the menu.  Along with French Dip Roast Beef, the French Connection Hero, Ham and Swiss, they will have 3-4 wrap sandwiches, to include a vegetarian.  They will include French Fries, Onion Rings, Mozzarella Sticks, and Chicken Fingers.
A picnic table is all in place in front of the café, and they will have a few small tables in the back, with umbrellas and chairs.  The hours of "La Petite" will be Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. John says that the week-
